What is Answer Engine Optimization?
AEO, also called Generative Engine Optimization or GEO, is the practice of getting an AI assistant to name your business when someone asks it for a recommendation. It overlaps with SEO, but the mechanics are different enough to be worth understanding on their own.
For twenty years, being found online meant ranking in a list of blue links. Someone typed a query, got ten results, and chose one. Optimizing for that was search engine optimization.
Increasingly, people do not get ten results. They ask an assistant and get one answer, sometimes with two or three businesses named inside it. There is no page two. Either you are in the answer or you are not mentioned at all.
Answer Engine Optimization is the work of being in that answer. The term is used interchangeably with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO); they describe the same problem.
How an AI assistant actually decides what to say
It helps to know what is happening behind the answer, because it explains why the fixes look the way they do.
When you ask a modern assistant about local businesses, it usually does not answer from memory. It runs a search, fetches a handful of pages, reads them, and writes a summary citing what it found. That fetch step is performed by a named crawler, and it happens in real time, in under a second, with no JavaScript execution.
Three things have to be true for your business to survive that process.
- The assistant's crawler must be allowed to fetch your site. Many are blocked by default by security products, and the site owner usually has no idea.
- Your pages must state, in raw HTML, who you are, what you do, and where you are. If that information is drawn in by JavaScript after the page loads, the crawler never sees it.
- Your content must contain an actual answer to the question. Assistants quote answers. A services page that lists what you offer gives them nothing to quote.
The JavaScript point catches a lot of people out. Schema markup injected through Google Tag Manager is invisible to exactly the crawlers you are trying to reach, because they do not run scripts. It has to be in the HTML the server sends.
Where AEO and SEO overlap, and where they part ways
They are not rivals. Strong SEO helps your AEO, because assistants lean on search results to decide which pages to fetch in the first place. If you rank nowhere, you are less likely to be retrieved.
But three differences matter in practice.
First, crawler access is a separate permission. Googlebot being welcome says nothing about whether ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot are. They are different user agents, controlled by different rules, and often blocked by a firewall setting rather than by robots.txt.
Second, structured data carries far more weight. In classic SEO, schema markup mostly earns you a richer-looking result. For an assistant, schema is the machine-readable record of what your business is. Without it, the assistant is guessing from prose.
Third, the unit of value is the answer, not the ranking. You can rank fourth for a term and still be the business the assistant names, because it picked the page that answered the question most directly.
What the work involves
In roughly the order that matters:
- Confirm which AI crawlers can reach your site, and unblock the ones that cannot. This is often a single toggle and can resolve within days.
- Publish a robots.txt that explicitly permits the retrieval crawlers rather than staying silent about them.
- Add schema.org JSON-LD to your pages: your organization, your location, your services, your prices if you publish them, and your frequently asked questions.
- Add an llms.txt file, a plain-text summary of your business written for machines to read.
- Write pages that answer real questions directly, one question per page, in language your customers actually use.
- Make sure your name, address and phone number are identical everywhere they appear. Conflicting details reduce the confidence an assistant has in recommending you.
An honest word about what this does and does not do
The technical work makes you eligible. It does not make you recommended.
This distinction gets blurred constantly in marketing copy, so it is worth stating plainly. Fixing crawler access and adding schema means an assistant can read you and knows what you are. Whether it recommends you over someone else depends on things that live outside your website: whether other sources mention you, your reviews, your reputation, how long you have existed.
We can demonstrate this from our own site. It holds a perfect technical readiness score and is still not recommended for most queries in our category, because our off-site footprint is new. Being readable is necessary and nowhere near sufficient.
Anyone promising that schema markup alone will get you recommended is overselling. The technical layer is the part you fully control, which is why it is the right place to start.
How long it takes
Crawler access problems resolve fastest. Once a block is lifted, assistants can reach the site within days.
Schema and content changes need to be crawled and incorporated, which is a matter of weeks.
Actually shifting which business an assistant names is the slow part, measured in months, and it moves with your off-site presence rather than your markup.
Because of that spread, the only sensible way to run this is to measure the same questions repeatedly over time and watch the trend, rather than checking once and drawing a conclusion.

Not much on its own. Opting out of training is a separate decision from opting out of retrieval, and blocking training crawlers does not stop you appearing in AI answers. Blocking retrieval crawlers does.
